In 2025, Jason received his MFA in Ceramics from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. His practice is deeply informed by the social aspect of pottery; through an exploration into dinnerware vessels, he strives to foster conversation and build community. This dedication to community engagement led him to co-found the very first 2025 Ohio University Atmospheric Conference.
Artist Statement
As an artist, I view my role as an act of service, continually exploring how my work can best support others. Growing up in an Asian household, physical affection faded once my parents could no longer pick me up. This caused a longing for human touch and connection, paired with a fear of both offering and receiving.
Central to my practice is an exploration of community and connection through tactile mark-making. My ceramic vessels serve as vehicles for me to connect with others: objects meant to be held, carrying the traces of my hands into the hands of others. Through working with clay and engaging in collaborative public participation, I emphasize the physicality of the hand and the intimacy embedded in each gesture. This approach allows my work to become an archive of the uniqueness and evidence of the human hand.
This focus on the hand is further amplified through soda firing, a process that accentuates surface, indentation, and irregularity. The resulting textures heighten both tactile and visual engagement, allowing each vessel to emerge with its own character. Like people, no two pieces are the same; each bears its own idiosyncrasies, shaped by touch, process, and chance.
